Issue No. 05 - September/October (2001 vol. 16)
It is hard, given the appalling events of the week of 10 September 2001, not to see everything in a different light. So it is in writing my editorial. Many articles in the last few issues of IEEE Intelligent Systems have focused on business and commerce applications. Two upcoming issues devote themselves to the use of our tools, techniques, and methods in science, particularly biology. Commerce and science are two aspects of human activity where we apply our intelligence and ingenuity. Of course, a third is ever present--defending the peace and making war.
