The authors examine industrial needs and the university environment. They report the results of three years' work at creating a university-based laboratory for expert systems. They describe sample projects illustrating successes and failures at properly balancing the universities' role in technology transfer, and they suggest an approach enabling schools to develop significant relationships with outside groups. The authors believe that this approach will interest small and medium-sized companies, groups and departments in large corporations, secondary companies supporting large corporations, and universities seeking effective ways to interact with local industry.
