The author discusses the last 25 years of the evolution of electronic design automation (EDA). He first examines the industry's dynamics and describes how it has coped with the increasing complexity of circuits. He argues that survival in the electronic design automation industry depends on how well it can produce a sequence of properly planned follow-on products and addresses the evolution of the hardware and software platforms on which these products reside.
