George Dantzig was one of my heroes. In my junior year of high school, I happened upon his book <em>Linear Programming and Extensions</em> while working on a science fair project. The text was clear and comprehensive, yet managed to communicate his excitement about tableaus of numbers. I had found a kindred spirit.
