Layered manufacturing technologies have revolutionized the process of prototyping complex geometric designs. And yet, the geometric modeling and CAD tools employed for such technologies have remained fairly traditional. We contend that volume modeling using voxel-based graphics methodologies provide a far improved template for rapid prototyping technologies. We present several advantages of such an approach by means of illustrative examples. A good match with the technology, elimination of the artificial .STL format, easy accomplishments of tasks like estimation of errors in the physical parameters of the fabricated objects, tolerancing, interference detection etc., are some of the major advantages of a voxel-based approach. We outline the capabilities of G-WoRP, a geometric modeling tool based on voxels, that is currently under development.
