This is an open call for papers for an upcoming special issue of Computing in Science & Engineering to be published in July/August 2019. The goal of this special issue is to promote scientific workflows for conducting computational and data-enabled discovery in all fields of research and scholarship. Active community participation is critical to improving, promoting, and expanding the use of scientific workflows. We welcome and encourage submissions from the international community, including application scientists, software developers, and stakeholders.
Several new classes of scientific workflows are emerging, such as large-scale experiment integration, instruments and observation devices with high-performance computing, and computational social sciences with big-data analytics and visualization. At the same time, the number, scale, and variety of applications with multiple concurrent simulations are increasing.
Scientific computing platforms (high-performance, high-throughput, and cloud-computing systems) are evolving to be more heterogeneous. The next-generation workflow systems need to be designed to address the emerging diverse requirements. This special issue provides a timely opportunity for a fresh perspective on the design, development, and integration of workflow systems, and it discusses progress towards more usable and sustainable solutions.
This special issue of Computing in Science & Engineering examines the current and future state of scientific workflows to inform the community of the excellent resources available to help advance research and education goals.
We are soliciting submissions on topics that include, but are not limited to,
- the state-of-the-art of workflow environments,
- benefits of scientific workflows to reduce the time to science,
- optimization techniques,
- standardization efforts,
- effective methods for addressing user requirements, and
- strategies to address emerging technologies including extreme-scale computing.
Manuscripts of particular interest will describe new algorithms and techniques to address data-intensive and compute-intensive solutions. Efforts that involve collaborations among government, industry, and academia are especially welcome.
