LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 12 May, 2011 – The IEEE Computer Society has launched a series of software engineering self-assessment courses that will greatly benefit technology professionals seeking continuing education credits as well as corporations in need of professional training options.
The courses in the IEEE Computer Society Software Engineering Assessment Series (SEAS) are aligned to the knowledge areas found in the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK Guide). As part of the IEEE/IET Electronic Library (IEL), SEAS courses earn both Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Professional Development Hours (PDHs).
The courses are designed to support experienced, professional software engineers who are at the level of the Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) credential. The first four courses in the series have been launched—Software Requirements, Software Design, Software Construction, and Software Testing. The remainder will be available by the end of the year. Each course consists of several subtopics that fully review one or more SWEBOK Guide knowledge areas. Quizzes are presented within every subtopic to measure the student's comprehension of the topic. Upon completion of a quiz (or the complete assessment course), a student will be presented with recommended references and further reading.
"These courses help software engineering professionals strengthen their credentials by identifying their knowledge gaps and providing information on how to learn more in those areas," said Dennis Frailey, chair of the Computer Society Professional Development Committee and a former Principal Fellow for Raytheon Corp.
The SEAS courses can help software engineers:
• Earn CEU/PDH credits in standard software engineering topics,
• Gain additional knowledge in a particular SWEBOK knowledge area,
• Identify knowledge gaps (and appropriate reference material) so they can strengthen their professional qualifications,
• Prepare for the IEEE Computer Society CSDP certification,
• Earn credits towards CSDP recertification, and
• Demonstrate knowledge proficiency for career advancement.
SEAS courses will also be useful to help corporations:
• Introduce a new professional development option for employees,
• Measure staff software developers' knowledge in a particular knowledge area,
• Develop and maintain a knowledgeable workforce,
• Protect the investment in the company workforce, and
• Establish and maintain process efficiencies by employing best practices in the software life cycle.
