IEEE MultiMedia Special Issue: Call for Papers

 

Large-Scale Multimedia Data Collections

 

Submissions due: 1 October 2011

Pivotal to many tasks in relation to multimedia research and

development

is the availability of a sufficiently large data set and its

corresponding ground truth. Currently, most available data sets

for multimedia research are either too small, such as the Corel

or Pascal data sets; too specific, such as the Text Retrieval

Conference Video (Trecvid) data set; or without ground truth,

such as the recent efforts by the Massachusetts Institute of

Technology and Microsoft Research Asia that gathered millions

of Web images for testing. While it’s relatively easy to crawl

and store a huge amount of data, the creation of ground truth

necessary to systematically train, test, evaluate, and compare

the performance of various algorithms and systems is a major

problem. For this reason, more and more research groups are

individually putting efforts into the creation of such corpus

to carry out research on large-scale data sets. There is a need

to unify these individual efforts into the creation of a unified

Web-scale repository that would benefit the entire multimedia

research community. The purpose of this special issue is to

present and report on the construction and analysis of large-scale

multimedia data sets and resources, and to provide a strong

reference for multimedia researchers interested in large-scale

multimedia data sets. The issue will specifically address the

construction of data sets; the creation of ground truths; the

sharing and extending of such resources in terms results and

analysis related to ground truth, features, algorithms, and tools.

 

The IEEE MultiMedia special issue on large-scale multimedia data

collections solicits original papers that will be of interest for IEEE

MultiMedia readers. The list of possible topics includes, but is not

limited to:

 

* Construction, unification, and evolution of corpus: the state of

use, the lessons learned, and their impact, scalability of results,

and range of applications.

 

* Framework for sharing of data sets, ground truths, features,

algorithms, and tools, as well as comparison and analysis of results.

 

* Large-scale corpus analysis techniques: knowledge mining from

large-scale multimedia corpus, optimization techniques on

large-scale multimedia data for efficiency, and techniques for

large-scale, content-based multimedia retrieval.

Performance evaluation methodologies and standards.

 

Submission Procedures and Deadlines

 

Submit your paper at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cs-ieee.

When uploading your paper, please select the appropriate special

issue title under the category “Manuscript Type.” If you have any

questions regarding the submission system, please contact Andy

Morton at mm-ma@computer.org. All submissions will undergo a

blind peer review by at least two expert reviewers to ensure a high

standard of quality. Referees will consider originality, significance,

technical soundness, clarity of exposition, and relevance to the

special issue topics. All submissions must contain original,

previously unpublished research or engineering work. Papers must

stay within the following limits: 6,500 words maximum, 12 total

combined figures and tables with each figure counting as 200 words

toward the total word count, and 18 references.

 

To submit a paper to the July–September 2012 special issue,

please observe the following deadlines:

 

1 October 2011: Full paper must be submitted using our online

manuscript submission service and prepared according to the

instructions for authors (please see the Author Resources page at

http://www.computer.org/multimedia/author.htm).

 

15 January 2012: Authors notified of acceptance, rejection, or

needed revisions.

 

5 April 2012: Final versions due.

The IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME) has been

the flagship multimedia conference sponsored by four IEEE societies

since 2000. It serves as a forum to promote the exchange of the latest

advances in multimedia technologies, systems and applications from both

the research and development perspectives of the circuits and systems,

communications, computer, and signal processing communities.

 

ICME 2012 will be held in Melbourne, Australia from the 9th to 13th July,

2012. The conference venue is the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition

Centre , a 6 Star Green Energy rated Convention and Exhibition Centre

in central Melbourne capable of hosting the whole conference in one

venue. There are abundant accommodation options available, from

student dorms to deluxe hotels within walking distance of the

Conference venue, and many of Melbourne's famous attractions.

 

Authors are invited to submit a full paper (two-column format, 6 pages)

according to the guidelines available on the conference website at

http://www.icme2012.org . The review will be double blind. Only

electronic submissions will be accepted. Topics of interest include,

but are not limited to:

 

· Multimedia computing systems and human-machine interaction

 

· Interactive media and immersive environments

 

· Animation, virtual reality and 3D imaging

 

· Multimedia content analysis and search

 

· Multimedia databases and digital libraries

ICME 2012 will showcase high quality oral and poster presentations as

well as demonstration sessions. It will target an overall acceptance

rate of 30%. Best papers and demonstrations will be awarded at the

conference. Authors of high quality papers will be invited to submit

an extended version of their work for potential publication in a

special issue/section of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. Accepted

papers must be registered and presented; otherwise they will not be

included in the IEEE Xplore Library.

 

ICME 2012 will feature IEEE society's sponsored workshops, and

individual proposals for workshops are also invited. We encourage

researchers, developers and practitioners to organise workshops on

various new emerging topics. Industry exhibitions will be held in

conjunction with the main conference. Keynote speeches and panel

discussions will also be a conference highlight. Proposals for

Call for Workshop Proposals

 

Workshop proposals are solicited for ICME 2012 . The workshops

should be clearly focused and facilitating active discussions

and constructive interactions on current or emerging topics of

interest. They should allow members of the community to compare and

discuss approaches, methods, and new concepts on research topics

pertinent to the main conference. These topics often offer emerging

interests to the multimedia research community or bridge the

community with other areas.

 

Workshop proposals for ICME 2012 should include:

 

• The title, goals, and duration of the workshop (half-day or

full-day, which will be held either on 9 th or 13 th July 2012)

• The specific topics that will be addressed by the workshop;

• The relevance and significance of this workshop to the main

conference;

• The history of the workshop if it is not the first version;

• A draft workshop call for papers with:

 

- the names, affiliations, email addresses, and short bios of the

workshop organizers, who should be experts in the related topics

and preferably from multiple institutions;

 

- the paper selection process;

 

- a list of potential Program Committee members and their affiliations.

 

Workshop proposals should not exceed four pages and should be

submitted to the Workshop Chairs, Jorge E. Caviedes

(jorge.e.caviedes@intel.com ) and Tao Mei (tmei [AT] microsoft.com ).

Workshop proposals will be evaluated based on various criteria including

the quality and level of details of the proposal, the theme of the

workshop, its relevance to the main conference, and the overall

balance of the conference workshop program.

Call for Tutorial Proposals

 

The ICME 2012 Organizing Committee invites proposals for tutorials.

ICME 2012 will take place in Melbourne, Australia from 9th to

13th July, 2012. The tutorials will be held on the first or last day

of the ICME 2012, either on 9th or 13th July.

 

We seek proposals for half-day and full-day tutorials. We are interested

in tutorials on established or emerging research topics within the

field itself, but we also welcome tutorials from related research

fields or application areas. The ideal tutorial should attract a wide

audience, be broad enough to provide a gentle introduction to the chosen

research area, and should also cover the most important contributions

in depth. Proposals that exclusively focus on the presenter's own work

or commercial presentations are not eligible.

 

Topics are referred to ICME 2012 main conference (CfP)

 

Proposal Submission

 

Tutorial proposals must be in PDF format and submitted via emails to

Tutorial co-chairs Yen-Kuang Chen (y.k.chen [at] ieee.org ) and

Shuicheng Yan (eleyans [at] nus.edu.sg ).

 

Selection

 

All tutorial proposals may first receive peer review. Then, from the

pool of proposal deemed of the highest quality, the chairs will make

the final selection of tutorials to present the greatest variety to

conference attendees and to fit the conference schedule.

 

Upon Acceptance

 

Speakers for all accepted tutorials will be required to sign a

commitment to present at the conference within 30 days of notification.

Speakers also need to provide a 300-word abstract (for inclusion in

registration materials). Materials for the conference DVD must be

delivered by 15th March, 2012.

 

Proposal Format

 

Proposals, prepared in an one column PDF file (no more than 3 pages),

should include the following information:

 

· Title of the tutorial

 

· Keywords

 

· Format of the tutorial (1/2 day or 1 day)

 

· Description of the tutorial

 

- Motivation---Why is this topic important?

 

- Objectives---Why should one attend this tutorial?

 

- Key takeaway messages---What can the attendees learn from

this tutorial?

 

- Target audience and prerequisite knowledge of audience---Who should

attend this tutorial?

 

- Outline---What does the speaker plan to give in the tutorial?

 

- Speakers credentials, e.g., a short BIO, whether the speaker has

offered tutorials before---Why should ICME choose this speaker to

teach this tutorial?

 

· Materials: A description (one or two paragraphs) of materials to

be provided to attendees on the conference DVD course slides,

annotated bibliography, code snippets etc. NOTE: the materials

themselves do not need to be provided in the proposal.

Call for Special Session Proposals

 

Special sessions supplement the regular program for ICME 2012.

They are intended to cover new and emerging topics in the fields of

multimedia. Each special session should provide an overview of the

state-of-the-art and highlight important research directions in a

field of special interest to ICME participants. It should be a focused

effort rather than defined broadly. Requirements:

 

Each special session should consist of at least 5 oral papers. It is

encouraged that the session begins with an overview paper on the topic

being addressed and that the remaining papers follow up with technical

contributions on the topic.

 

The following information should be included in the proposal:

 

• Title of the proposed special session;

• Names/affiliations of the organizers (including brief bios and

contact info);

• Session abstract;

• List of authors committed to submit paper (including a tentative

title and a 300-word abstract for each paper).

 

The session abstract should answer the following three questions:

 

• Motivation: why is this topic important for organizing a special

session in ICME 2012?

• Objective: who will be interested to submit papers?

• Target audience and key message: what can the attendees learn from

this special session?

 

This is a competitive call. Proposals will be evaluated based on

the timeliness of the topic and relevance to ICME, as well as the

qualification of the organizers and quality of papers in the proposed

session. Please note that all papers in the proposed session will go

through a review process similar to regular papers, to ensure that

the contributions are of the highest quality. Once the proposal has

been approved, the organizers as well as the special session chairs

will coordinate the review process. Important Dates:
