Intel’s Rattner to Deliver Opening Address at SC09
LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 22 July, 2009 -- Parallel supercomputing pioneer and Intel CTO Justin Rattner will deliver the opening address on Tuesday, 17 November at SC09, the premier international conference on high-performance computing, networking, storage, and analysis. Rattner, an Intel Senior Fellow, also directs the company’s global research efforts in microprocessors, systems, and communications, including the company’s disruptive research activity.
“Justin’s vision and leadership in the late 80s and early 90s led to the first teraflop supercomputer and helped shape the technology direction and innovation that drove an exciting era of parallel supercomputing,” said Wilfred Pinfold, SC09 General Chair. “He is uniquely qualified to talk about the use of 3D Internet technology for immersive science, which is one of the three identified thrust areas for this year’s conference.”
SC09, sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and Association for Computing Machinery, offers a complete technical education program and exhibition to showcase the many ways high-performance computing, networking, storage, and analysis lead to advances in scientific discovery, research, education, and commerce. This premier international conference includes a globally attended technical program, workshops, tutorials, an exhibit area, demonstrations, and hands-on learning.
The SC conference series is among Tradeshow Week magazine’s Top 200 events. Expected to draw 11,000 attendees, making it the largest event to come to Portland, Oregon, SC09’s technical program will be enhanced this year with discussions related to three special thrust areas: 3D Internet, Bio-Computing, and Sustainability.
“The output of today’s supercomputing applications is complex and often highly visual. Creating a persistent, standardized environment where this output can be modeled will make it easier to share and explore. Justin has championed the creation of tools that use the unique features of virtual environments to explore these models and facilitate education, collaboration, and scientific understanding,” said Pinfold. “His opening address is sure to be an insightful discussion of keen interest to the entire HPC community.”
Rattner joined Intel in 1973. He was named its first principal engineer in 1979 and its fourth Intel Fellow in 1988. In 1989, he was named Scientist of the Year by R&D Magazine for his leadership in parallel and distributed computer architecture. In December 1996, Rattner was featured as Person of the Week by ABC World News for his visionary work on the US Department of Energy’s ASCI Red System, the first computer to sustain one trillion operations per second (one teraFLOPS) and the fastest computer in the world between 1996 and 2000.
In 1997, Rattner was honored as one of the Computing 200, the 200 individuals having the greatest impact on the US computer industry today, and subsequently profiled in the book Wizards and Their Wonders from ACM Press.
