Industry Column Launched in Computer
LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 18 September, 2009 – In an effort to broaden its coverage to include non-academic contributions, Computer magazine in September launched a new column called Industry Perspective.
One of the first projects of the IEEE Computer Society’s Industry Advisory Board, the column will run every other month in the flagship magazine. The first column, “University-Industry Synergy: An Eclectic Dialog for Revised Relationships,” was written by IAB member Sumi Helal, a University of Florida professor and the magazine’s associate editor-in-chief.
The initial Industry Perspective column focuses on whether universities meet the needs and expectations of the computer industry and industrial research and development for new employees, and on whether industry takes full advantage of university research and education opportunities.
The Industry Perspective column will tackle timely and important issues that cross industry-academia boundaries and interests, expressing industry concerns and sharing feedback from the academic community. Articles written by industry leaders, interviews of prominent individuals, and roundtable discussions will be featured in the rotation.
IAB member Ike Nassi, executive vice president and chief scientist at SAP, will serve as the column’s lead advisor. IAB members Bill Schillit, a senior researcher at Google; and Stephen Huffman, vice president and CTO at MITRE; will serve as the other two advisors.
Other IAB members include:
• Neil Siegel, sector vice president, Technology and Advanced Systems, Northrop Grumman
• Jeffery Wilcox, vice president of research engineering, Lockheed Martin
• Nick Bowen, vice president of technology, IBM
• Atsuhiro Goto, vice president and general manager, Information Sharing Platform Labs, NTT
• Gargi Keeni, vice president, Quality Consulting Practice, Tata Consulting
• Tirumale (TK) Ramesh, Technical Fellow, Boeing
• Brian Stevens, CTO, Red Hat Software
• Tony Hey, corporate vice president, External Research Division, Microsoft
• Henry Tirri, senior vice president and head of Nokia Research Center, Nokia
• Steven Hillenius, executive vice president, SRC; executive director, Semiconductor Research Corp.
The IAB was launched in mid-2008 as the Advanced Technology Executive Forum by Rangachar Kasturi, 2008 Computer Society president and the Douglas W. Hood Professor and chair of computer science and engineering at the University of South Florida; Carl K. Chang, editor in chief of Computer and professor and chair of the computer science department at Iowa State University; and other Society leaders.
