Relaunched CSDL Site Boasts Improvements

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. 25 September, 2008—The IEEE Computer Society has introduced a new and more powerful version of its Computer Society Digital Library, a comprehensive research tool that offers online access to more than 276,000 articles.

With a clean, modern interface, the new version of the CSDL features quicker refreshes due to AJAX being used within the browser. Breadcrumb trails are provided for quick backtracking and information on periodical issues and years loads much faster.

The main digital library page now combines subject, magazines, transactions, letters, and proceedings browse functionality, as well as improved conference list presentation, and greater subject-browsing granularity. The library’s 49 subject areas are slated to grow and change along with the field of computing. Derived from library content strengths and domain expert advice, the subject areas lead to home pages that offer pointers to related content.

Inner search boxes have been added to allow searches within a specific area. Despite the improvements, users can rely on the familiarity of the search function, which still allows for search by full text, title, author, date, ISSN/ISBN, and exact phrase. In addition, users can still cross-search with the Association of Computing Machinery’s digital library.

“One of the most exciting things about this new interface is something users won’t see.” says IEEE Computer Society Digital Library Committee Chair, Phillip A. Laplante. “The CSDL now provides behind-the-scene flexibility for all kinds of future design work and enhancements.”

The CSDL provides online access to 26 society magazines and transactions and more than 2,700 conference publications. Members can subscribe to the complete CSDL for one low rate. Libraries and institutions can subscribe to the complete CSDL, Magazines, or Pick5 packages. Institutions may also qualify for a free trial; to determine eligibility, email csdl@computer.org.
