IEEE-USA: Electrical Engineering Unemployment “Alarming”

The unemployment rate among US electrical engineers reached a new high, according to an IEEE-USA analysis of US Labor Department jobs data. In the first quarter of 2013, unemployment for electrical engineers was 6.5 percent—double the rate for the same period in 2012. The number of jobs in the field decreased by 40,000 in the first quarter of 2013. By contrast, software developer jobs increased 2.2 percent during that period. The IEEE-USA’s vice president of government relations Keith Grzelak characterized the increase as “alarming.” In 2010 and 2011, the unemployment rate for electrical engineers remained roughly 3.4 percent.
