UK 4G Spectrum Auction Underwhelms

The Office of Communications, the UK’s telecommunications regulatory agency, reported it received £2.34 billion from its recent 4G-mobile-spectrum auction, far less than the £3.5 billion OFCOM expected. In 2000, the agency’s 3G spectrum auction raised £22 billion for the government. Everything Everywhere; Hutchison 3G UK; Niche Spectrum Ventures, a BT subsidiary; O2; and Vodafone submitted the successful 4G bids. Carriers expect the UK’s 4G network will provide users with mobile transmission rates of up to 100 Mbps and will increase the available spectrum by about 75 percent. OFCOM expects to grant licenses by March of this year with services to launch in May and June. The agency said, “Almost the whole UK population will be able to receive 4G mobile services by the end of 2017 at the latest.” (BBC)(OFCOM)
