eBay Goes Green with Fuel-Cell-Powered Data Center

eBay has announced plans to build a new six-megawatt renewable energy-based data center. The facility, slated to begin operations in mid-2013, would be the largest US renewable-energy fuel-cell installation not owned by a public or private utility. eBay will install 30 Bloom Energy fuel-cell-powered servers into its Utah data center to replace backup generators and uninterruptible-power-supply components. Biogas, an alternative fuel that is typically a byproduct of decaying organic matter in landfills, will power the fuel cells. This is eBay’s fifth and largest renewable-energy project. Notes the New York Times, “The fuel cells will account for less than 15 percent of the energy needs of all eBay data centers around the country, a clue that the industry is likely to remain deeply dependent on the grid and its energy mix indefinitely.” (USA Today)(The New York Times)(eBay via BusinessWire)
