Technology Provides Firefighters with Tool for Predicting Erratic Fires

Scientists from the US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station and the US Los Alamos National Laboratory have developed a computer model that predicts erratic fire behavior. Existing tools are not designed for accurately predicting how fires act in highly variable, unpredictable conditions such as those caused by strong, shifting winds or those experienced in forests that either have many dead trees because of insect infestations. The new HIGRAD/FIRETEC tool simulates the changing relationships between fire, fuels, atmosphere, and topography by using both computational fluid dynamics and fire modeling. The researchers say the tool is designed to provide insights from modeling that will enhance firefighter safety and better protect people in the path of wildfires.
