Animated Film Logs Massive Compute Cycles

DreamWorks reports its latest 3D animated movie, The Croods, required more compute cycles to complete than any other film it has created. Rendering the animated film took 80 million compute hours. This is 15 million more hours than The Rise of the Guardians, which had held the record. The film about a Stone Age family was completed in three years with the work of between 300 and 400 animators. The images generated took 250TB of data storage capacity, the studio told Computerworld. This includes 70TB of images the studio is able to reuse in other projects, such as background art or plants.
