High-Tech Bracelet Help Civil Rights, Aid Workers

A new device uses technology and social media to help civil rights and aid workers in the field who are at risk of being kidnapped or killed. Civil Rights Defenders, a nonprofit human-rights organization, developed the personal alarm bracelet, which uses phone and satellite-navigation technology to send an alarm via social media that the wearer is in danger, such as having been kidnapped, hurt, or killed. The bracelet sends messages with information about the wearer and his or her location if the worker activates it manually or someone removes it. The messages go to a central monitoring location and to other local aid workers who could mobilize assistance. The Civil Rights Defenders is seeking people who are willing to monitor an individual worker’s bracelet via social media. The group started developing the bracelet following the kidnapping and murder of Chechen rights worker Natalia Estemirova in 2009 and has named the campaign the Natalia Project in her honor. It distributed the first five devices at its Defenders’ Days conference in Stockholm 2 through 5 April. The goal is to equip 55 workers with the alarm in the next 18 months, which will require funding from sponsors and the public. (BBC)(Gizmag)(Civil Rights Defenders)(The Natalia Project)
