Berners-Lee: Open Access is Future of Academic Publishing

In the future, said World Wide Web creator Sir Tim Berners-Lee, academic papers will be open access rather than locked behind paywalls. Speaking at the opening of the Digital Productivity and Services Flagship at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australia’s government organization for scientific research, Berners-Lee said open access ensures fair availability to academic data, much of which is based on publicly funded research, even for those who cannot afford a publication subscription. Institutions of higher education and individuals spend millions of dollars annually to gain access to academic journals. Publishers say they deserve to be paid for making their articles available.
