US Law Enforcement Seeks to Access Web Activity without Court Order

The Obama administration says it wants to extend the USA Patriot Act to allow the US Federal Bureau of Investigation gather information from online communications without a court order. Reportedly, this access would only be needed for intelligence gathering or suspected terrorism cases with approval from a judge. Under the proposal, e-mail content would not be included; however, the message’s sender, the time and date it’s sent and received, and possibly the user’s Internet surfing history would be fair game. Some proponents are equating this to obtaining toll-call telephone records, which FBI agents can access without court order. (Associated Press)(RedOrbit)(AFP)
