Retaliatory Attack Takes UK Law Enforcement Site Offline

The UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency took its website offline Wednesday following a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. SOCA decided to take the site down to prevent possible damage to other clients using the same service provider. The incident is thought to be tied to the agency’s role last month with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation in shuttering 36 sites alleged to have been selling stolen financial information. SOCA’s site was previously targeted by hacker groups such as LulzSec and Anonymous. “SOCA are treating the attacks with the contempt they deserve,” Rik Ferguson of security vendor Trend Micro told the BBC. He added that implementing DDoS-mitigation technologies might not be worth the expense for the agency. “The sensible person doesn't walk around in a beekeeper's outfit to keep the wasps away from their ice cream in summer,” he stated. “The sensible person accepts that wasps are attracted to ice cream and that wasps will always outnumber ice creams.” (BBC)(ZDNet)(Reuters UK)
