Researchers Develop Paper-Based, Disposable Touch Displays

US and French scientists have developed paper-based electronic touch pads that could be used in various applications, including to secure items such as electronics being shipped or sterile medical instruments. At a cost of 25 cents per square meter, these paper pads are sufficiently inexpensive to be deemed disposable. The paper is coated in aluminum and transparent polymer and functions as a capacitor. The metalized material used is similar to that found on beer bottle labels and glossy book covers. The researchers say they use lasers to cut individual capacitors in the paper, each of which could function as a touchpad key. They are working to find inexpensive, flexible, and disposable power sources and electronics that could work with the new technology. They published their work in Advanced Materials.
