Microsoft’s Ballmer to Retire

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive officer, announced he will retire in the next year. Ballmer joined Microsoft in 1980 as its first business manager and became the company’s chief executive officer after Bill Gates stepped down in 2000. The company is now looking for a replacement.  Speculation regarding Microsoft’s Ballmer-less future has already begun, with pundits pointing out that the stock rose 6 percent immediately following his announcement. During his tenure, WIRED opined, “the company dug itself a hole that it will be lucky to crawl from in the decade to come.” (WIRED)(Technology Review)(Businessweek)(Reuters)
