Massive Data Breach Exposes Credit-, Debit-Card Numbers

A data breach at a payments processing firm reportedly gave hackers access to as many as 1.5 million credit- and debit-card numbers. Global Payments discovered the attack in early March but only made some details public on 30 March. The company reported on 2 April that the breach has been “contained to the best of our ability” and that it is still investigating the matter, which reportedly involves several servers from which hackers accessed North American Visa and MasterCard cardholders’ account information. No customer names, addresses, or Social Security numbers were exposed; and no fraudulent transactions have occurred to date as a direct result of the breach, claimed Global Payments executives. The company specializes in processing payments for small merchants. In its last fiscal year it reportedly handled $167 billion in transactions.  (CNN)(The Wall Street Journal)(CNET)(Krebs on Security)
