Researchers Create UltraHD TV Chip

A new high-definition TV standard—known as ultrahigh-def, Quad HD, or 4K—promises to provide users with four times the resolution of conventional high-definition television. The technology is based on the high-efficiency video coding codec. Although Broadcom made the first commercial HEVC chip, MIT scientists created their own HEVC chip for research purposes. The MIT researchers say their chip has greater performance efficiency and they added correction capabilities in hardware and video-data storage in memory. The scientists say their chip could help them determine how different video data interacts with the hardware. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing constructed and Texas Instruments funded the device.
