Product managers play a pivotal role in maximizing value for software companies. The Software Product Management (SPM) Maturity Matrix assists them in creating an effective SPM environment by offering organizational benchmarking, process assessments, and best practices. There are several case studies and expert evaluations of the SPM Maturity Matrix, but no large-scale quantitative analysis exists.
At the 20the IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference (RE 2012), researchers from the Netherlands presented results from a three-year case study of the SPM Maturity Matrix in 62 Dutch software companies. They analyzed the cases to uncover anomalies, such as blocking questions, then worked with experts to define improvements that addressed the anomalies. In addition to suggested process improvements, the study offers valuable insight into the maturity of a broad range of software companies.
“Evaluating the Software Product Management Maturity Matrix” and other papers from RE 2012 are available to IEEE Computer Society members and paid subscribers via the Computer Society Digital Library.
