Application Protects Children from Online Predators

Undergraduate students from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev created an application called The Social Privacy Protector that they say is able to prevent criminals from accessing personal information and keep underaged Facebook users safe from pedophiles. The application scans a user’s “friends” list for connections and uses an algorithm to score them. It then flags those individuals with the lowest scores as suspicious. The user has the option of restricting access to their personal user information without needing to “de-friend” the person. The Social Privacy Protector also alerts users to any Facebook applications that might pose a threat to privacy. The application is free through Facebook and is also available as a Firefox add-on. The researchers claim the work will be published, but provided no further detail. (EurekAlert)(Times of Israel)(American Associates, Ben-Gurion of the Negev)(Friends Protector)
