Leading Supplier Can’t Keep Pace with Chip Demand

Mobile-device demand is so high that component suppliers cannot keep pace. For example, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the leading chip foundry for major mobile-chip manufacturers, reports that it won’t be able to meet the demand for advanced 28-nanometer process chips until perhaps 2013. The company blames the shortage on underestimates of demand. The company’s customers, including Qualcomm and Nvdia, are reportedly seeking other manufacturing options to be able to meet its needs for the 28-nm chips.
