New Oxide Semiconductor-Display Technology Announced

Researchers from Sharp Corp. and R&D company Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) have developed a new semiconductor material that enables touchscreens with high resolution, strong performance, and less power consumption. The new IGZO technology crystallized an indium (In), gallium (Ga), and zinc oxide (ZnO) semiconductor. Manufacturers could make smaller thin-film transistors with the material than with amorphous IGZO semiconductors, with little adjustment to existing production lines. The new material will be used in mobile-device LCD displays, available commercially this year, as well as organic LEDs. Sharp and SEL plan to continue research to expand their material’s use in nondisplay applications. The researchers will present their results at the 2012 Society for Information Display’s Display Week Symposium on 5 June in Boston.
