Scientists Update Infectious-Disease Tracking Software

An infectious-disease tracking application created by US researchers has been reconfigured to encourage its wider use. The Ohio State University associate professor Daniel Janies has reconfigured the Supramap Web application for integrating genetic, evolutionary, geospatial, and temporal data so that researchers and public safety officials can develop their own front-end applications based on it. His research team has created a server-based modular Web service and new client software. Ultimately, say the researchers, this type of virus tracking will enable scientists to help get public health resources to affected locations in the field. American Museum of Natural History and Ohio Supercomputer Center scientists developed the original Supramap application in 2007 to track the spread of the H1N1 and H5N1 influenza viruses. They tested their new software by tracking key mutations in the H7 avian influenza virus. (EurekAlert)(SUPRAMAP)(The Ohio Supercomputer Center)
