Agency Releases New Biometric-Sensor Communication Protocol

The US National Institute of Standards and Technology released a new protocol for biometric sensors to use when communicating via wired or wireless network. NIST’s WS-Biometric Devices permits systems ranging from desktop computers to smartphones to access sensors that capture biometric data using Web services. The researchers say the protocol will simplify the process of setting up and maintaining secure biometric systems as well as make them more interoperable and less expensive than conventional systems that use proprietary sensors and other devices. “This would be useful to many organizations that house biometric systems, including border-control and customs agencies,” said NIST’s Kevin Mangold. (PhysOrg)(National Institute of Standards and Technology)(Specification for WS-Biometric Devices, NIST Special Publication 500-288.)
