News Service Uses an Algorithm to Write Articles

Narrative Science, a Chicago-based company, has developed technology that takes massive datasets and renders them into a readable story. The articles that Narrative Science technology writes include sports updates and news on corporate earnings. It can also summarize information into an article based on Twitter posts and data entered into smartphones. For example, parents at a Little League baseball game could enter data into a mobile application called GameChanger that generates a story. Narrative Science expects its technology to produce 1.5 million stories this year. Among its clients are Forbes and niche news services. Company cofounder Kristian Hammond told Wired magazine that he expects more than 90 percent of all news will be written by computer in 15 years. He predicts technology will create articles on events and trends not typically covered by human journalists. (Wired)(The Atlantic)(Narrative Science)
