Hugo J. De Man was born in Boom, Belgium on September 19, 1940. He received the electrical engineering degree and the Ph.D. degree in Applied Sciences from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Heverlee, Belgium, in 1964 and 1968, respectively. In 1968 he became a member of the staff of the Laboratory for Physics and Electronics of Semiconductors at the University of Leuven, working on device physics and integrated circuit technology. From 1969 to 1971 he was at the Electronic Research Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, as an ESRO-NASA Postdoctoral Research Fellow, working on Computer-Aided Device and Circuit Design. In 1971 he returned to the University of Leuven as a Research Associate of the NFWO (Belgian National Science Foundation). In 1974 he became a Professor at the University of Leuven. In 1975 he was a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He was an Associate Editor for the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits from 1975-1980 and European Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on CAD from 1982 to 1985. He received a Best Paper Award at the ISSCC of 1973 on Bipolar Device Simulation and at the 1981 ESSCIRC conference for work on an integrated CAD system. In 1985 he received the Darlington Award of the IEEE CAS Society and in 1986 the Best paper Award in CAD from the ICCD-86 Conference. In 1989 he received the Best Paper Award at the Design Automation Conference. From 1984 to 1995 he was Vice-President of the VLSI systems design group of IMEC (Leuven, Belgium), where the actual field of this research division is design methodologies for Integrated Systems for telecommunication. In 1995 he became a Senior Fellow of IMEC responsible for research in system design technologies. Prof. De Man is a fellow of IEEE and a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Belgium.
