This paper describes a simple ellipsoidal filtering algorithm for identifying and smoothing cell membranes in tomographic reconstructions of electron micrographs of frozen bacteria. The flattened ellipsoids are oriented along the membrane using surface normal estimates derived from principal component analysis.
