The introduction of advanced features, provided by the emerging next generation networks based on the Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) protocol framework in grid computing systems, promises to significantly improve the performance of distributed applications and services. An accurate experimental analysis of the main GMPLS features, such as the different reliability solutions, is then required.
In this paper, we present the experimental implementation of different reliability solutions in the Metrocore/VESPER field trial, the high-performance network infrastructure located in Pisa, Italy. Protection and restoration schemes are investigated both at the IP/MPLS and physical layer.
