Scalability and reliability are essential to VoD, a peer-to-peer based VoD architecture (RSVoD) is proposed in this paper. In the proposed architecture, assignable-size user buffer, algorithms of parents selection and subtree migration are employed to ensure the reliability and scalability of system, finis avalanche problem is discussed also. The attributes and performance of RSVoD are analyzed in theory. Performance studies based on simulations are carried out also, and the results show that the presented architecture outperforms recently proposed similar architectures in a number of important performance metrics, such as the server stress, reliability, service capacity, time of failure, and so on.
