This paper studies the Fermat Number Transform ,and proposes 1D and 2D invariance nature and cumulative nature of FNT(Fermat Number Transform), and combines with features of gray images , and establishes the encoding/decoding model for gray image and designs corresponding algorithm. The result show that the model proposed in this paper has good performance whose compression is about 87.93% of JPEG-LS. The coding model in this paper adopts a new theoretical foundation, and applicates FNT to gray image compression for the first time which can be improved and optimized greatly.
