A serious limitation of energy consumption will prevent the current network technologies from scaling up their capacity to the constantly increasing network traffic, and completely novel network technologies should therefore be sought circumventing the energy ceiling so as to allow the ever-increasing traffic. The potential of dynamic optical path switching is pointed out, and some of the enabling device technologies along with associated challenges are discussed.
