Context-aware applications adapt to changingcomputing environments or changing user circumstances/tasks. Context information that supports suchadaptations is provided by the underlying infrastructure, which gathers, pre-processes and provisions context informationfrom a variety of context information sources. Suchan infrastructure is prone to failures and disconnectionsthat negatively impact on the ability of context-awareapplications to adapt (and therefore dramatically impacton their usability). This paper describes a model-basedautonomic context management system (ACoMS) that candynamically configure and reconfigure its context informationgathering and pre-processing functionality in order toprovide fault tolerant provisioning of context information. The approach uses standards based descriptions of contextinformation sources to increase openness, interoperabilityand scalability of context-aware systems.
