Wireless sensor networks can enable the reliable information gathering and transmission for a variety of applications that range from environment protection and civil structure monitoring to battlefield surveillance. This paper presents an innovate detecting system based on wireless sensor networks for detecting occupancy of vehicle berth in car park. The battery-powered wireless sensor nodes can be easily deployed in car park, and the measurements are transmitted to control center through wireless channel. The network topology, communication protocol and sensor node hardware are described, and energy efficiency is an important concern in the design of the system.
