In this paper a load-balancing strategy for distributed web-applications is proposed. The approach assumes uneven traffic with extreme peaks that cannot be served with a given infrastructure. The approach presented herein is based on distributing the load temporally in time. In online web-based applications the perceived response time is more important than the actual response time and various strategies for manipulating the perception of response time are discussed. The technique is relatively easy to incorporate with existing web-applications using modern web-technology such as AJAX. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.
