We have lulled ourselves into accepting government-mandated "cosmetic" measures in place of substantive security on the erroneous assumption that a little security is better than none. Under public pressure to "do something" after a major security incident, governments often feel compelled to come up with quick fixes that appease the populace. In truth, such cosmetic populist security is worse than no security at all because it lulls us into dropping our guard. Keywords: airport security, government-mandated, quick fix, 9/11
