The National Institute of Standards and Technology selected the Advanced Encryption Standard, a new standard symmetric key encryption algorithm, from fifteen qualifying algorithms. NIST has made efforts to bring other federal cryptographic standards up to AES?s level and to update and extend NIST's standard cryptographic modes of operation.
