Emerging economies are a rapidly growing market for computing products and IT solutions. Although several groups from industry and academia are focusing their research on these new markets, most concentrate primarily on front-end solutions that target client systems that can potentially reach high-volume end-consumers. It is increasingly important that research in this area also consider an end-to-end perspective. Emerging economies offer several challenges unique to the IT infrastructure, namely the delivery fabric and the enterprise backbone, which are needed to sustain large-scale pervasive computing. These challenges present corresponding opportunities for high-impact innovation.

This article is part of a special issue on Emerging Economies.
