Examples of context-aware artifacts include everyday objects, appliances, and handheld devices. In general, developers can choose one of two basic approaches to make an artifact context aware. They can select self-supported context-awareness, which lets an artifact remain self-contained, or they can choose infrastructure-supported context-awareness, which can complement devices with extensive reasoning and sensing capabilities. This article surveys such approaches and their implementations in various devices, also considering associated challenges and future research directions.
