A series of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks were launched against computer systems and services in the US and South Korea beginning July 4th. A DDoS attack is an attempt to make a computer service unavailable to its intended users. The mechanism for such attacks includes a network of a large number of compromised computers; the attack itself is carried out in several phases: discover vulnerable hosts, establish a botnet, launch an attack, and flood a target. There's no silver bullet for fending off a DDoS attack. A practical defense includes prevention, detection, and mitigation strategies.
