Advances in AI and human-computer interaction offer unprecedented and seemingly endless opportunities to both enhance traditional entertainment forms and support creation of new ones. However, several fundamental scientific and technical impediments must be overcome to achieve these promises. This invited article is part of a special issue on interactive entertainment.
