A holonic or multiagent systems approach to manufacturing job shop scheduling evolves the rules by which the system creates schedules, rather than the schedule itself. The authors tested the system using a benchmark agent-based scheduling problem and compared performance results with pure heuristic scheduling heuristics and randomly generated mixed heuristics.
