Material-handling systems based on automated guided vehicles have achieved great success in the last 15 to 20 years. AGV-based solutions' flexibility and relative cheapness compared with traditional systems have contributed to this success but have led to system management problems. A simulated annealing algorithm can solve the problem of designing the path the AGVs will follow. This article is part of a special issue on advanced heuristics in transportation and logistics.
