Editors' note: Severe limitations in computational, memory, and energy resources make implementing high-quality speech recognition in embedded devices a difficult challenge. In this article, the authors investigate the energy consumption of computation and communication in an embedded distributed speech recognition system and propose optimizations that reduce overall energy consumption while maintaining adequate quality of service for the end user.
