A fragmented-object model supports distributed objects with arbitrary internal communication protocols and interaction patterns, and with a truly distributed internal structure. FORMI is an implementation of such a model, integrated into standard Java RMI middleware. The authors' approach lets legacy clients transparently invoke methods of FORMI objects without knowledge of fragmented objects. FORMI objects can dynamically adapt themselves by replacing existing fragments.
